Possible Causes
Faulty position switch or encoder, Misaligned cam, Damaged wiring to position sensor, Control board input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power and place the softener in bypass before working on the valve head.
- Locate the position sensor: On many Culligan electronic valves, a small switch or encoder is mounted near the cam/gear. Remove the cover to access it.
- Check alignment: Ensure the cam tab or magnet that passes the sensor is not broken or out of alignment. Gently rotate the cam by hand (with power off) and confirm it can pass the sensor without interference.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the control board. Reseat the connector and look for corrosion or broken conductors.
- Clean the area: Remove iron sludge or salt dust that may interfere with the sensor. Use a dry cloth; avoid solvents on plastic parts.
- Test operation: Restore power, take the unit out of bypass, and start a manual regeneration. If the valve stops and Err 2 reappears at the same point, the sensor or board is likely defective.
Note: Replacing the position switch/encoder usually requires removing the cam and may be best done by a qualified technician.
