Possible Causes

Blocked brine refill flow control, Clogged brine line, Stuck brine valve, Low water pressure to softener

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Place the softener in bypass and disconnect power before opening the valve head or brine connections.

  • Check water in brine tank: After a refill cycle, there should be several inches of water in the brine tank. If it is dry, refill is not occurring.
  • Inspect brine line: Remove the brine line from the valve and from the brine tank safety float. Check for salt blockage or kinks. Flush with warm water.
  • Clean brine refill flow control: Locate the brine refill flow control (often a small button or orifice in the valve). Remove and clean any debris or scale.
  • Verify house pressure: Ensure adequate inlet pressure to the softener. Very low pressure can prevent proper brine refill.

After cleaning, reconnect everything, take the unit out of bypass, and manually start a regeneration to confirm that the brine tank refills properly.
