Possible Causes
Bacteria in resin tank, Hydrogen sulfide in source water, Stagnant water in plumbing, Brine tank contamination
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and place it in bypass if performing sanitization. Use appropriate disinfectants and follow label directions.
Steps to address odor:
- 1. Confirm source: Test raw water and softened water separately. If odor is only after the softener, the resin or brine system may be contaminated.
- 2. Sanitize softener: Follow EcoWater’s sanitization procedure, typically involving adding a measured amount of household bleach or approved sanitizer to the brine well and running a manual regeneration.
- 3. Clean brine tank: Empty the brine tank, remove sludge and debris, and wash with a mild bleach solution. Rinse thoroughly and refill with fresh salt.
- 4. Address source water: If raw water contains hydrogen sulfide, consider adding an EcoWater iron/sulfur filter or other treatment upstream of the softener.
- 5. Flush plumbing: After sanitization, run all faucets to flush stagnant water and disinfected water from the lines.
