Possible Causes

Aged resin beads, Iron or manganese fouling, Chlorine damage to resin, Inadequate salt dosage over time

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the softener and place it in bypass before opening the mineral tank or valve. Depressurize the system by opening a nearby faucet.

Steps to address:

  • 1. Confirm hardness: Test raw and softened water hardness with a test kit. If both are similar, the resin is not exchanging properly.
  • 2. Perform a manual regeneration: Run a full manual regeneration and retest hardness. If there is only slight improvement, resin may be fouled.
  • 3. Use resin cleaner: Add an EcoWater-approved resin cleaner to the brine well following label directions. Initiate a regeneration to draw the cleaner through the resin bed.
  • 4. Inspect resin age and condition: If the system is over 10–15 years old or has been exposed to high chlorine, the resin beads may be physically degraded. In that case, replace the EcoWater cation resin bed with new resin of the correct volume and type.
  • 5. Adjust salt settings: Ensure the salt dose is adequate for your hardness and usage. Under-salting can leave resin partially regenerated.
