Possible Causes

Salt level actually low, Salt bridge preventing contact with water, Brine tank not refilling correctly, Incorrect salt setting on control

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Use proper lifting technique when handling salt bags.

  • Step 1 – Visually inspect salt: Confirm the salt level is at least a few inches above the water level. If low, add GE-approved salt pellets.
  • Step 2 – Check for bridging: Probe the salt bed with a broom handle to ensure there is no hollow space under a crust.
  • Step 3 – Verify brine refill: Start a manual regeneration and observe the brine tank during the refill stage. Confirm that water is entering the tank. If not, troubleshoot the brine refill valve and float assembly.
  • Step 4 – Confirm salt setting: Ensure the control is set for the correct salt type and capacity per the GE manual.
  • Step 5 – Test water: After a full regeneration with adequate salt, test water hardness at a faucet. If still hard, further diagnosis of the resin bed may be needed.
