Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener or turn off the dedicated breaker before removing any covers. Water softeners operate near water; avoid working with wet hands.
- Step 1 – Power reset: Unplug the GE water softener for 5 minutes. Plug it back in and check if “Err 1” clears. Re-enter hardness, time of day, and regeneration settings per the user manual.
- Step 2 – Check outlet and transformer: Verify the wall outlet has 120 VAC and that the GE low-voltage power supply (transformer) is firmly plugged into both the outlet and the control head. Inspect the transformer cable for cuts or crushed sections.
- Step 3 – Inspect control connections: Remove the control cover. Confirm all low-voltage harnesses are fully seated on the control board pins, especially the display/keypad ribbon and power connector. Reseat each connector once.
- Step 4 – Factory reset (if available): Follow the GE manual procedure to restore factory defaults, then reprogram. If the error persists immediately after reset, the board is likely faulty.
- Step 5 – Replace control board: If power and wiring are good and “Err 1” returns, replace the GE electronic control board assembly. Transfer the front cover and keypad carefully, matching each connector to the same position.
When to stop: If you smell burning electronics, see scorch marks, or the transformer overheats, disconnect power and contact a professional or GE service.
