Possible Causes
Sticking brine refill valve, Incorrect refill time setting, Control board output failure, Float/overflow assembly malfunction
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener and close the inlet valve if the brine tank is actively overflowing.
- Step 1 – Stop overflow: Place the softener in BYPASS and use a wet/dry vacuum or bucket to remove excess brine from the tank.
- Step 2 – Inspect float/overflow: Remove the brine well cover and check the float/overflow assembly. Ensure the float moves freely and the safety shutoff valve is not stuck open.
- Step 3 – Check refill valve: Inspect the internal brine refill valve in the control head for debris or scale. Clean or replace if it does not close fully.
- Step 4 – Verify settings: Confirm the brine refill time or salt setting is correct for your model and salt type. Overly long refill times can cause high brine levels.
- Step 5 – Replace components if needed: If the valve continues to leak water into the brine tank when not in refill, replace the brine valve assembly or the entire valve body. If the board is energizing the refill solenoid at the wrong time, replace the electronic control board.
Warning: Do not bypass or remove the float safety; it protects against flooding.
