Possible Causes
Weak or failing GE power transformer, Loose power connector at control board, Intermittent household outlet, Internal control board power regulator failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Work with power disconnected when handling wiring. Use a properly rated meter if testing voltage.
- Step 1 – Check outlet: Plug a lamp or small appliance into the same outlet to confirm stable power. Avoid using switched or GFCI outlets that may be tripped.
- Step 2 – Inspect transformer: Verify the GE-branded low-voltage transformer is warm but not hot during operation. Check the cord for damage and ensure the plug is tight in the outlet.
- Step 3 – Test low-voltage output: With a multimeter set to AC volts, measure the transformer output (typically 24 VAC) at the plug going into the control head. Replace the transformer if voltage is low or fluctuating.
- Step 4 – Check board connector: Unplug the unit, then reseat the low-voltage connector on the control board. Look for discoloration or melted plastic indicating overheating.
- Step 5 – Replace control board: If the transformer is good but the error persists and the unit loses time/settings, replace the electronic control board.
Note: After replacing power components, reprogram hardness, time, and regeneration schedule.
