Possible Causes
Failed real-time clock circuit on control board, Corrupted firmware, Power interruptions without backup, Control board component failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing the control cover.
- Step 1 – Reprogram time: Set the correct time of day and regeneration time. Observe whether the time keeps accurate over 24 hours.
- Step 2 – Power stability: Ensure the softener is on a non-switched outlet that is not frequently turned off. Avoid plugging into power strips that may be switched.
- Step 3 – Factory reset: Perform a factory reset per the GE manual, then re-enter all settings. Monitor if “Err 7” returns.
- Step 4 – Replace control board: If the clock drifts significantly or the error reappears after reset, the electronic control board timing circuit is defective and should be replaced.
Tip: Mark the current time and check again after 24 hours to verify clock accuracy.
