Possible Causes

Salt bridge forming above water level, Salt mushing at bottom of tank, Incorrect salt level sensor reading (if equipped), Using inappropriate salt type for GE softener

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Wear gloves; sharp salt crystals can irritate skin. Avoid breathing dust.

  • Step 1 – Check for salt bridge: Use a broom handle or similar tool to gently push straight down into the salt bed. If you feel a hard crust with empty space underneath, you have a salt bridge.
  • Step 2 – Break the bridge: Carefully break the crust by working the handle around the tank, avoiding damage to the brine well tube. Do not use excessive force.
  • Step 3 – Remove salt mush: If the bottom is filled with a thick, slushy salt mush, scoop it out with a plastic container and discard. Refill with fresh, high-purity GE-approved water softener salt pellets.
  • Step 4 – Check sensor (if present): Some GE models have a salt level sensor in the brine well. Ensure it is not crusted with salt. Clean gently with warm water and reinstall.
  • Step 5 – Reset indicator: Follow the manual to reset the salt level indicator or enter the correct salt level setting.

Tip: Keep the salt level between 1/4 and 3/4 full to reduce bridging.
