Possible Causes
Clogged inlet/outlet screens, Excessive iron or sediment in valve, Resin fines plugging distributor, Undersized plumbing connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place the softener in BYPASS and relieve pressure before disassembly.
- Step 1 – Confirm bypass effect: Verify that pressure is normal in BYPASS and low in SERVICE. This isolates the issue to the softener.
- Step 2 – Clean screens: Remove inlet and outlet fittings and clean any inlet/outlet screens or flow restrictors.
- Step 3 – Inspect valve passages: Remove the control head and inspect internal passages for iron sludge or sediment. Flush with clean water.
- Step 4 – Check distributor tube: Inspect the distributor tube and bottom screen for plugging with resin fines. Replace if restricted.
- Step 5 – Consider prefiltration: If sediment is recurring, install a GE whole-house sediment filter upstream of the softener.
