Possible Causes
Corrupted control board memory, Failed electronic control board, Power surge damage, Loose control harness connection
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the GE water softener from the outlet before removing covers. Water is present in the cabinet—avoid spilling water on electrical parts.
- Step 1 – Power reset: Unplug the softener for 5 minutes. Plug it back in and check if “Err 1” clears. Re‑enter hardness, time, and regeneration settings per the GE owner’s manual.
- Step 2 – Check outlet and power: Verify the outlet has 120 VAC and is not controlled by a wall switch. Avoid using extension cords.
- Step 3 – Inspect control harness: Remove the top cover, then gently pull the electronic control forward. Inspect the low‑voltage harness connectors going to the turbine sensor, motor, and display board. Reseat each connector firmly.
- Step 4 – Look for board damage: Check the control board for burn marks, corrosion, or water intrusion. If present, the board is likely defective.
- Step 5 – Replace control board if needed: If the error returns immediately after reset and wiring is secure, replace the GE electronic control board. Transfer the old faceplate/overlay to the new board, reconnect harnesses, and reprogram settings.
- When to stop: If you are not comfortable working around live voltage or the board shows extensive damage, contact a qualified appliance technician.
