Possible Causes
Failed valve motor, Jammed rotor and disc assembly, Broken motor drive gear, Faulty motor wiring harness
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener and close the inlet water valve before servicing the valve head.
- Step 1 – Try a manual regeneration: Press and hold the REGEN button for several seconds to start a manual regeneration. Listen for the motor. If you hear humming but no movement, the motor or rotor may be jammed.
- Step 2 – Inspect motor and gears: Remove the top cover. Locate the small valve motor on the side of the control valve. Check for broken or stripped plastic gears. Ensure the motor mounting screws are tight.
- Step 3 – Check rotor and disc: With power disconnected, remove the motor and gently try to rotate the rotor/disc shaft by hand. It should turn smoothly with some resistance. If it is seized or very stiff, the rotor and disc assembly is likely damaged or fouled with debris.
- Step 4 – Test motor voltage: With the unit plugged in and calling for regeneration, carefully measure voltage at the motor connector (typically 24 VAC low voltage). If voltage is present but the motor does not turn, replace the motor.
- Step 5 – Replace parts as needed: Replace the GE valve motor if it fails to run under power. If the rotor is jammed or scored, replace the GE rotor and disc assembly and associated seals.
- When to stop: If you cannot safely test live voltage, have a technician perform the diagnosis.
