Possible Causes
Salt level sensor not reading correctly, Salt bridge preventing level change, Incorrect salt type or large pellets, Sensor harness issue
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before handling internal wiring. Wear gloves when breaking salt bridges.
- Step 1 – Check for salt bridge: Push a broom handle or plastic rod straight down into the salt. If you hit a hard crust with empty space underneath, you have a salt bridge. Carefully break it up without damaging the tank.
- Step 2 – Verify salt type: Use clean, evaporated or solar water softener salt recommended by GE. Avoid rock salt with high impurities.
- Step 3 – Inspect sensor (if equipped): Locate the salt level sensor or float in the brine tank. Ensure it moves freely and is not buried or jammed in hardened salt.
- Step 4 – Check wiring: Follow the sensor cable to the control head and ensure the connector is secure and free of corrosion.
- Step 5 – Replace sensor if needed: If the warning persists and the sensor is physically intact but not responding, replace the GE salt level sensor assembly. If your model uses an algorithm only, you may need to reset the salt level setting in the menu.
