Possible Causes
Bypass valve partially closed or installed backwards, Plugged inlet screen, Jammed rotor and disc, Collapsed resin bed blocking outlet
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Close the main water supply before disconnecting plumbing. Relieve pressure by opening a faucet.
- Step 1 – Switch to bypass: Move the GE bypass valve to Bypass. If water flow returns, the blockage is inside the softener.
- Step 2 – Check inlet screen: Remove the inlet connection and inspect the inlet screen for sediment. Clean or replace as needed.
- Step 3 – Inspect rotor and disc: Remove the valve head and check the rotor and disc for debris or damage that could block flow. Clean or replace the GE rotor and disc assembly.
- Step 4 – Check resin tank: If the resin has collapsed or migrated into the valve, you may see resin beads in the valve head. In this case, replace the GE resin bed and install a new GE upper distributor / basket.
- Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the valve head, return the bypass to service, and verify normal flow.
