Possible Causes
Failed valve motor, Jammed rotor and disc, Broken cam gear, Faulty cam position switch
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately close the inlet valve to stop water flow and unplug the unit. Do not leave the softener running to drain indefinitely.
- Step 1 – Manually advance cam: Remove the top cover. With power off, use a screwdriver on the manual advance slot (if provided) to gently rotate the cam to the Service position. Restore water and check if house water is normal.
- Step 2 – Inspect motor and gears: Check the valve motor and gear train for broken teeth or stripped gears. Replace damaged parts.
- Step 3 – Check rotor and disc: Remove the motor and cam, then inspect the rotor and disc for scoring or debris. Clean or replace as needed.
- Step 4 – Test motor operation: With the unit plugged in and a regeneration started, verify that the motor receives power and turns. If not, replace the GE valve motor or GE electronic control board depending on test results.
- Step 5 – Verify cam switch: Test the cam position switch for proper operation. Replace the GE cam position switch if it does not change state.
