Possible Causes

Broken upper distributor/basket, Cracked riser tube, Over‑pressurization of tank, Severely degraded resin

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure before disassembling the softener. Resin beads can clog fixtures and appliances.

  • Step 1 – Inspect fixtures: Remove faucet aerators and shower heads to clear resin beads.
  • Step 2 – Remove valve head: Take off the control valve and inspect the top of the resin tank. Look for a broken GE upper distributor/basket or cracked riser tube.
  • Step 3 – Replace damaged components: Install a new GE upper distributor/basket and, if needed, a new riser tube.
  • Step 4 – Replace resin: If resin is severely degraded or contaminated, replace the GE compatible resin bed.
  • Step 5 – Flush plumbing: After reassembly, flush the home’s plumbing thoroughly to remove remaining beads.
