Possible Causes

Plugged inlet/outlet screens, Fouled resin bed, Partially closed bypass valve, Undersized plumbing connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Close the main water supply and relieve pressure before disconnecting plumbing.

  • Step 1 – Compare in bypass: Place the bypass valve in Bypass. If pressure improves, the restriction is inside the softener.
  • Step 2 – Clean screens: Remove inlet and outlet connections and clean any screens or flow restrictors of sediment.
  • Step 3 – Check bypass position: Ensure the bypass is fully in the service position when in use.
  • Step 4 – Evaluate resin: If the resin is heavily fouled with iron or sediment, it can restrict flow. Consider replacing the GE resin bed and cleaning the distributor tube and screens.
  • Step 5 – Verify plumbing size: Confirm that the softener is correctly sized for your home’s flow requirements and that adapters are not excessively reducing pipe size.
