Grünbeck Hydraulic Shock During Valve Switching

Noticeable water hammer or banging noises in pipes when the softener switches modes

Possible Causes

High inlet pressure, Rapid valve movement, Missing or defective shock absorber, Incorrect bypass configuration

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Close inlet valve and relieve pressure before installing any new components.

  • Check pressure: Measure inlet pressure. If it exceeds Grünbeck's recommended maximum, install or service a pressure reducing valve upstream.
  • Slowly open valves: Ensure that manual shutoff valves are fully open and not partially throttling flow, which can worsen hammer.
  • Install shock absorber: If not already present, have a plumber install a water hammer arrestor near the softener.
  • Check bypass: Verify that the bypass valve is correctly set and not causing sudden flow changes when the softener switches.
