Harvey Salt Bridging / Salt Mushing

Salt level in Harvey cabinet forms a solid mass; water level appears low and softener performance declines

Possible Causes

High humidity installation, Use of fine or powdered salt, Overfilling salt cabinet, Infrequent salt top-ups

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Use gloves and avoid inhaling salt dust. Do not use sharp metal tools that could damage the cabinet.

  • Break salt bridge: Insert a broom handle or plastic rod into the salt and gently break up any solid crust until loose salt falls into the water below.
  • Remove mush: Scoop out any thick, porridge-like salt mush from the bottom and dispose of it. Refill with fresh, recommended Harvey block or tablet salt.
  • Control fill level: Do not overfill; keep salt below the maximum line indicated in the cabinet.
  • Improve ventilation: If the area is very damp, improve ventilation to reduce humidity around the softener.

Severe or repeated bridging may require more frequent cabinet checks and use of the specific salt type recommended by Harvey.
