Possible Causes

Exhausted or fouled resin bed, Incorrect bypass valve position, Incorrect hardness or capacity settings, Internal resin channeling

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off water and relieve pressure before adjusting bypass valves. Use a hardness test kit to confirm results.

  • Check bypass position: Verify the Harvey bypass set is in the correct service position (inlet and outlet open, bypass closed). Incorrect valve positions can send hard water around the softener.
  • Test hardness: Test water at the softener outlet and at a raw water tap. If both are similar, the softener is not exchanging hardness.
  • Review settings: Confirm hardness and capacity settings match your water supply and Harvey model. Underestimating hardness can cause premature exhaustion.
  • Regenerate twice: Run two full manual regenerations back-to-back to fully recharge the resin, then retest hardness.

If water remains hard after correct regeneration and settings, the resin may be exhausted or iron-fouled and require replacement by a technician.
