Control display shows “Err1” and softener will not start a regeneration cycle automatically.

Safety first: Unplug the softener or switch off its dedicated breaker before opening the control head. Close the inlet valve and depressurize by running a nearby cold tap.

• Check for flow during water use: Open a faucet and watch the display. If the unit normally shows flow (gpm) but now shows none and Err1 appears, the turbine is likely not sending pulses.
• Inspect turbine assembly: Remove the top cover of the Hellenbrand control valve. Locate the turbine/flow meter (usually in the outlet side of the valve body). Pull the turbine out carefully and check for debris, iron sludge, or scale preventing rotation. Clean with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly.
• Check turbine magnet and vanes: Ensure the magnet is intact and firmly embedded in the turbine. Replace the turbine if vanes are broken or magnet is missing.
• Inspect wiring: Trace the small sensor wire from the turbine to the control board. Make sure the plug is fully seated, pins are not corroded, and the cable is not pinched or cut.
• Reset and test: Reassemble, restore power, and run water at a faucet. Confirm that the display now shows flow and that Err1 clears. If the error returns, the flow sensor circuit on the control board may be defective and the board will need replacement.
