Possible Causes
Failed drive motor, Stripped or jammed drive gear train, Defective position switch or encoder, Faulty motor wiring or control board output
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and close the inlet valve. Bypass the softener if you need water service during troubleshooting.
- Check valve movement: With the unit in bypass and depressurized, remove the control valve cover. Gently try to rotate the main cam or rotor by hand (if accessible). It should move smoothly with moderate resistance. If it is seized, the internal rotor/seals may be jammed.
- Inspect motor and gears: Locate the drive motor on the Hellenbrand valve head. Look for cracked gear housings, stripped plastic gears, or signs of water intrusion. If gears are damaged, replace the motor/gear assembly.
- Test motor operation: Restore power briefly and manually initiate a regeneration. Watch the motor. If it hums but does not turn, it is likely failed. If it does not energize at all, check the wiring harness and connector at the control board.
- Check position switch/encoder: Many Hellenbrand valves use a micro-switch or encoder to report rotor position. Verify the switch actuator is contacting the cam and that the wiring is intact. A failed switch can cause Err2 even if the motor runs.
- Replace defective components: If the motor does not run under power, replace the drive motor assembly. If the motor runs but the board never sees position changes, replace the position switch/encoder or the control board as indicated by testing.
