Possible Causes

Defective brine level sensor, Disconnected or damaged sensor wiring, Heavy salt bridging preventing sensor contact, Control board sensor input failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not reach into the brine tank with power tools. Unplug the unit before working on wiring or sensors.

  • Check for salt bridge: Push a broom handle or similar tool straight down into the salt bed. If you feel a hollow space under a hard crust, break up the bridge so salt can contact the water and sensor.
  • Inspect sensor: Locate the Hellenbrand brine level or salt sensor (float or electronic probe) in the brine tank. Ensure it is mounted at the correct height and not stuck in salt or sludge.
  • Clean sensor: Remove the sensor and clean off salt, iron, or slime buildup with warm water and a soft brush. Do not use harsh chemicals.
  • Check wiring: Follow the sensor cable to the control head. Confirm the connector is fully seated and the cable is not cut or chewed.
  • Test and replace: Reinstall the sensor and restore power. If Err9 remains and the sensor is clean and correctly positioned, replace the sensor. If a new sensor does not resolve the error, the control board sensor circuit may be defective.
