Possible Causes
Salt bridge preventing salt from dissolving, Salt mush blocking brine well, Misadjusted or dirty salt level sensor, Incorrect salt level setting in control
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Wear gloves when handling salt and brine. Unplug the unit before adjusting any sensors or wiring.
- Verify actual salt level: Dig down into the brine tank with a plastic scoop. Confirm there is loose salt all the way to the bottom and not just a crust on top.
- Break salt bridge: If you find a hard layer with empty space underneath, carefully break it up with a broom handle so salt falls into the water.
- Clear salt mush: If the bottom is full of wet, slushy salt mush, remove several buckets of it and replace with fresh pellet salt. Rinse the brine well if heavily fouled.
- Check sensor height and cleanliness: Clean the salt level sensor or float and ensure it is set to the correct height per the Hellenbrand manual. Adjust the control’s salt level setting if it was misprogrammed.
- Reset alarm: After correcting the salt condition, clear the Lo Salt message (usually by pressing a button or power cycling). Monitor over the next few cycles to confirm it does not return.
