Safety first: If the control head is very hot or you smell burning, unplug the unit immediately and do not operate it until inspected.

Inspect for obvious damage: Remove the cover and look for burnt components or discoloration on the board.
Check motor and solenoids: Disconnect the motor and any external valves one at a time to see if heat generation decreases, indicating a shorted component.
Test transformer: Measure output voltage and temperature. Replace if out of spec or excessively hot under normal load.
Improve ventilation: Ensure the softener is not enclosed in a tight space without airflow.
Replace board if needed: If overheating persists with normal loads, replace the control board.
