Possible Causes

Drive motor stalled or failed mid-cycle, Jammed rotor or piston, Broken cam or gear, Control board locked in regen mode

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Immediately place the bypass valve in bypass to stop water flow through the softener and prevent flooding or excessive drain use. Unplug the unit.

  • Relieve pressure: Open a nearby faucet to relieve pressure before opening the control head.
  • Inspect drive mechanism: Remove the control cover and check the motor, gears, and cam for obvious damage or misalignment.
  • Manually advance valve: If your Hellenbrand model allows, use the manual knob or cam to rotate the valve back to the Service position. Do this slowly and only when depressurized.
  • Check for internal binding: If the rotor/piston will not move, internal seals or debris may be jamming it. Disassemble the valve stack and inspect seals, spacers, and piston for wear or obstruction. Replace as needed.
  • Replace failed parts: Install a new drive motor or cam/gear assembly if they are stripped or seized. Restore power and test a full regeneration while monitoring drain flow.
