Control displays “Err 01” and softener will not start a regeneration cycle

Safety first: Unplug the softener or switch off the dedicated circuit breaker before opening the cabinet. Shut off the water supply and relieve pressure by running a nearby cold faucet.

Step-by-step checks:

• 1. Inspect the turbine (flow meter):
  • Remove the top cover of the Kenmore softener (usually two screws at the back, then slide forward).
  • Locate the turbine/flow meter assembly in the outlet plumbing manifold (often on the right side of the valve head).
  • Disconnect the small sensor harness from the control board and visually inspect for corrosion, broken wires, or loose pins.
  • Remove the turbine housing cap and pull out the turbine wheel. Check for iron buildup, sand, or debris preventing free rotation. Clean with vinegar and a soft brush.
• 2. Spin test:
  • With the unit still unplugged, spin the turbine wheel with your finger. It should rotate freely with no binding.
  • If it sticks, replace the turbine/flow meter assembly.
• 3. Harness and board check:
  • Inspect the wire harness from the turbine to the control board for cuts, pinched sections, or rodent damage.
  • Reseat the connector on the control board firmly.
  • Restore power and water, then initiate a manual regeneration. Watch the display to see if flow is now detected (some models show flow rate or stop displaying Err 01).
• 4. Replace parts if needed:
  • If Err 01 persists after cleaning and harness inspection, replace the turbine/flow meter assembly.
  • If a new turbine does not resolve the error, the electronic control board is likely defective and should be replaced.
