Possible Causes
Stuck brine valve plunger, Clogged brine refill port, Failed brine valve coil (on models with electric brine valve), Control board output failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener and close the water supply. Place the unit in bypass to relieve pressure.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Access the brine valve:
- Remove the top cover.
- Locate the brine valve assembly on the valve head where the brine line connects from the salt tank.
- Disconnect the brine line and inspect for salt blockage or hardened salt at the fitting.
- 2. Inspect and clean:
- Disassemble the brine valve (note orientation of spring and plunger).
- Clean the plunger, seat, and port with warm water and a soft brush to remove iron or scale.
- Ensure the plunger moves freely and the spring is not broken.
- 3. Electrical check (if electric brine valve):
- Inspect the brine valve coil wiring and connector.
- If equipped and you are qualified, test the coil for continuity with a multimeter. An open coil means it must be replaced.
- 4. Reassemble and test:
- Reassemble the brine valve and reconnect the brine line.
- Restore water and power, take the unit out of bypass, and start a manual regeneration.
- Watch for proper brine draw and refill. If Err 03 returns, suspect a failed brine valve assembly or control board.
