Possible Causes
Salt bridge in brine tank, Salt mush preventing proper brine formation, Dirty brine well or float assembly, Faulty salt level sensor (on equipped models)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: No electrical work is required; keep the unit plugged in.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Check for salt bridge:
- Open the salt tank lid.
- Use a broom handle or similar tool to gently push down on the salt surface.
- If you feel a hard crust with empty space underneath, you have a salt bridge. Carefully break it up without damaging the tank.
- 2. Inspect for salt mush:
- Look for a thick, slushy layer of salt at the bottom that does not dissolve well.
- Remove mush with a scoop or wet/dry vacuum and refill with fresh, high-quality pellet salt.
- 3. Clean brine well and float:
- Remove the brine well cover (tube inside the tank).
- Lift out the float/air check assembly and clean it with warm water.
- Ensure the float moves freely and the air check ball is not stuck.
- 4. Sensor check (if equipped):
- Some Kenmore models have a salt level sensor. Inspect wiring and clean any salt buildup on the sensor.
- If the sensor is damaged, replace the salt level sensor.
