Control panel displays E1 and softener will not start a regeneration cycle

Safety first: Turn off electrical power to the softener and close the main water supply before disconnecting any plumbing. Depressurize by opening a nearby cold-water faucet.

• Check house shutoff valves: Verify the main valve feeding the Lindsay softener is fully open. Many E1 errors occur after plumbing work when the bypass or main valve is left partially closed.
• Inspect Lindsay inlet bypass/valve block: Confirm the Lindsay bypass is in the Service position (not Bypass). Move the handles fully and firmly into position.
• Clean inlet screen: Remove the inlet union from the Lindsay control valve. Locate the small stainless or plastic inlet screen and rinse debris under running water. Reinstall carefully, ensuring O-rings are seated.
• Check inlet flow sensor/turbine: On many Lindsay valves, a small turbine or paddle wheel sits in the inlet port. Remove the sensor cap, pull out the turbine, and clean iron or sand buildup. Spin it by hand; it should move freely. Reinstall with correct orientation.
• Restore service: Reconnect plumbing, slowly open the inlet valve to avoid water hammer, then restore power. Run a manual regeneration and confirm the E1 code clears.

If E1 returns immediately and water supply is confirmed, the inlet flow sensor or valve body may need replacement.
