Possible Causes

Failed Lindsay flow meter sensor, Stuck or scaled turbine wheel, Reversed inlet/outlet plumbing, Damaged sensor cable

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Shut off water and power before removing any plumbing connections.

  • Confirm plumbing orientation: Verify that the Lindsay softener inlet is connected to the supply and outlet to the house. Reversed connections can cause E4 and improper flow sensing.
  • Inspect and clean turbine: Remove the flow meter housing from the valve body (usually on the outlet side). Pull out the turbine wheel and clean iron, sand, or scale. Ensure it spins freely on its shaft.
  • Check sensor head: The magnetic or Hall-effect sensor sits above the turbine. Confirm it is fully seated and not cracked. Clean off any rust or debris.
  • Verify wiring: Trace the flow sensor cable to the control board. Reseat the connector and inspect for cuts or rodent damage.
  • Test flow reading: Restore water and power. Open a faucet and watch the display. If flow still reads 0 and E4 returns, the sensor is likely defective and should be replaced.
