Possible Causes
Corrupted control board memory, Dead or weak backup battery (if equipped), Power surge damage to microcontroller, Incorrect hardness or capacity settings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before removing the control panel.
- Factory reset: Follow the Lindsay user manual to perform a factory reset of the controller. This often clears E5 caused by corrupted settings.
- Re-enter settings: Program correct time, hardness, salt dosage, and regeneration capacity according to your water test and Lindsay specifications.
- Check backup battery: If your Lindsay model has a coin-cell or small backup battery on the board, replace it with the exact type and polarity. A dead battery can cause memory errors.
- Surge protection: If E5 appeared after a storm or outage, consider adding a surge protector to the outlet. Inspect the board for burn marks; if present, the board must be replaced.
If E5 persists after reset and reprogramming, the Lindsay control board is likely defective.
