Possible Causes

Worn or damaged Lindsay drain piston/seal, Debris lodged in drain port, Broken cam not returning piston to service position, Cracked valve body around drain port

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Shut off water to the softener and disconnect power. Open a faucet to relieve pressure.

  • Confirm continuous drain: Check the drain hose; if water flows steadily even when the unit should be in service, the drain valve is not sealing.
  • Inspect drain line: Remove the drain line from the valve and check for debris at the port. Flush any sediment.
  • Check cam movement: Remove the control cover and manually advance the cam through cycles. Watch the drain piston linkage. If the cam does not fully move the piston back, the cam or motor may be damaged.
  • Replace drain piston/seals: Follow Lindsay service instructions to remove the valve end cap, extract the drain piston and seals, and install a new Lindsay drain piston kit. Lubricate O-rings with silicone grease only.

If the valve body is cracked or eroded at the drain port, the entire Lindsay valve body must be replaced.
