Lindsay Salt Bridging / Salt Mushing

Salt level in brine tank does not go down even after multiple regenerations

Possible Causes

Salt bridge forming a hard crust above water level, Fine salt or high humidity causing salt mush, Incorrect salt type for Lindsay softener, Low water level in brine tank

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Wear gloves when breaking salt bridges to avoid sharp edges.

  • Probe for bridge: Insert a broom handle or plastic rod into the salt. If you feel a hollow space under a hard crust, a bridge is present.
  • Break the bridge: Gently tap and break the crust so salt falls into the water below. Do not strike the sides of the tank hard.
  • Remove salt mush: Scoop out any mushy, sludge-like salt from the bottom and replace with fresh pellets.
  • Improve conditions: Use high-purity pellet salt and keep the area dry and well-ventilated to reduce future bridging.
