Possible Causes

Defective drive motor, Jammed rotor/cam assembly, Broken motor harness or loose connector, Failed control board motor driver circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the Morton water softener from power before opening the cabinet. Turn off the water supply and place the unit in bypass if you need to remove any parts.

  • Power reset: Unplug the softener for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. Reprogram the time and hardness if needed and attempt to start a manual regeneration. If Err 01 returns, continue.
  • Check for mechanical jam: Remove the top cover. Locate the valve rotor and cam assembly driven by the small motor. Inspect for salt bridging, debris, or foreign objects binding the rotor. Gently rotate the cam by hand (with power off). It should move smoothly with some resistance. If it is seized or very stiff, the rotor seal or valve body may be binding and need replacement.
  • Inspect motor and wiring: Verify the drive motor is firmly mounted and its wiring harness is fully seated on both the motor and control board. Look for burnt spots, corrosion, or broken wires. Reseat connectors.
  • Test motor operation: With the cover still off, plug the unit back in and start a manual regeneration. Observe whether the motor attempts to turn the cam. If the motor hums but does not turn, the motor is likely failing. If there is no movement or sound, test for voltage at the motor during regen (only if you are qualified to work with live voltage). Replace the motor if it is not running when powered.
  • Control board check: If the motor tests good but does not receive power during a regen command, the electronic control board may have a failed motor driver. Inspect for burnt components. Replacement of the control board is typically required.
  • Reassemble and test: After clearing jams or replacing parts, reassemble the cover, restore water, take the unit out of bypass, and run a full manual regeneration to confirm the error is cleared.
