Possible Causes
Stuck or clogged turbine, Failed turbine sensor, Broken or disconnected turbine wiring harness, Control board flow input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and place it in bypass before removing any plumbing connections.
- Locate the turbine assembly: On Morton softeners, the turbine (flow meter) is typically in the outlet side of the valve body. Remove the retaining clip and gently pull out the turbine housing.
- Inspect and clean turbine: Check the turbine wheel for iron, sand, or debris that could prevent it from spinning. Clean with water and a soft brush. Ensure the turbine spins freely with a gentle puff of air or by blowing through the housing.
- Check sensor and wiring: The turbine sensor (often a Hall-effect sensor) sits adjacent to the turbine. Inspect for cracks, corrosion, or damage. Verify the wiring harness is fully connected to both the sensor and the control board.
- Test flow detection: Reinstall the turbine, restore water (take out of bypass), and run water at a faucet. With power on, many Morton units display a flow indicator or gallons remaining that should change as water flows. If no flow is detected, replace the turbine and sensor assembly.
- Control board check: If a known-good turbine and sensor still do not register flow, the control board’s flow input circuit may be defective. Replace the electronic control board if necessary.
