How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener before working on the control panel.
- Check programming: Verify that the Morton softener is not set to a mode that inhibits manual regeneration (consult the user manual for your specific model). Clear any lockout or vacation mode.
- Test other buttons: If only the REGEN button fails but other buttons work, the keypad membrane may be partially failed. If multiple buttons fail, the entire keypad or board is suspect.
- Inspect keypad and board: Remove the control panel and look for moisture, corrosion, or physical damage around the keypad area. Ensure the ribbon cable is fully seated.
- Replace keypad/board: On many Morton units, the keypad and display are integrated with the control board. Replace the control panel assembly if the REGEN button remains unresponsive after reseating connections.
- Manual regeneration workaround: Until repaired, you can often force a regeneration by temporarily adjusting the hardness or capacity settings to trigger an immediate regen, but this is model-dependent and should be done according to the service manual.
