Possible Causes
Failed salt level sensor (if equipped), Corroded sensor contacts, Disconnected sensor harness, Control board sensor input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit before reaching into the brine tank or accessing wiring.
- Identify sensor type: Some Morton models include an optional salt level sensor or monitor in the brine tank. Locate the sensor (often a float or probe assembly) and follow its wiring to the control board.
- Inspect sensor and wiring: Remove the sensor from the brine tank. Clean off any salt crust or sludge with warm water. Check the wiring harness for corrosion or breaks and ensure connectors are fully seated.
- Test sensor operation: If the sensor is a float type, move the float through its range and listen/feel for internal switches. For probe types, check resistance according to the service manual. Replace the salt level sensor if it does not respond correctly.
- Control board input: If a known-good sensor is installed and Err 09 persists, the control board’s sensor input may be defective. Replace the electronic control board if necessary.
- Manual monitoring: Until the sensor system is repaired, visually check the salt level regularly and keep it between 1/3 and 3/4 full.
