Possible Causes

Accumulated minor faults, Excessive regeneration failures, Internal diagnostics threshold reached, Control board firmware issue

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before opening the cabinet.

  • Check for additional codes: Some Morton models display a generic “Service” message along with a more specific error code. Scroll through the display or consult the manual to see if another code is stored.
  • Perform a full inspection: Verify salt level, check for leaks, listen for abnormal noises during regeneration, and confirm that water is being softened (test hardness).
  • Run a manual regeneration: Start a manual regen and observe each step (backwash, brine draw, rinse, refill). Note any unusual behavior or stalls.
  • Power reset: Disconnect power for 10 minutes, then restore. If the Service message clears and does not return, it may have been a transient fault.
  • Contact support if persistent: If the Service message returns frequently without a clear cause, the electronic control board may have an internal fault or outdated firmware. Replacement or professional service may be required.
