Possible Causes
Clogged inlet screen, Fouled or compacted resin bed, Partially closed bypass valve, Debris in valve body or turbine
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and use the bypass valve to isolate the softener when disassembling. Depressurize by opening a faucet.
- Compare bypass vs service: Place the softener in bypass and check household pressure. If pressure improves significantly, the restriction is within the softener.
- Inspect inlet screen: Remove the inlet connection and check for a sediment screen or debris at the inlet port. Clean thoroughly.
- Check bypass valve position: Ensure the bypass is fully in the service position and not partially closed.
- Inspect turbine and valve passages: Remove the turbine assembly and check for debris. Inspect valve ports for scale or resin beads and flush as needed.
- Evaluate resin bed: If restriction persists, the resin bed may be fouled or compacted. Consider resin cleaning (iron remover) or full resin replacement if the bed is severely degraded.
