Possible Causes
Bacteria growth in resin bed or brine tank, High hydrogen sulfide in source water, Infrequent regeneration, Contaminated brine tank
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and place it in bypass if performing disinfection. Follow Morton’s sanitizing instructions and use only approved sanitizers.
- Sanitize the softener: Use a water softener sanitizer or household bleach in the amount recommended by Morton. Add to the brine well and run a full regeneration to draw the sanitizer through the resin bed.
- Clean brine tank: Empty the brine tank of salt and sludge. Wash the interior with a mild bleach solution, rinse thoroughly, and refill with clean salt.
- Increase regeneration frequency: Program the softener to regenerate more often to prevent stagnation in the resin bed.
- Address source water sulfur: If hydrogen sulfide is present in the raw water, a dedicated sulfur filter may be required upstream of the softener. The softener alone may not remove sulfur odors.
- Flush plumbing: After sanitizing, run all faucets for several minutes to flush treated water through the system.
