Possible Causes
Failed drive motor, Jammed rotor and cam, Broken cam gear, Control board not advancing cycle
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately place the softener in bypass to stop water waste. Unplug the unit before opening the valve head.
- Confirm stuck position: Observe the valve cam position and note which step it appears to be in (backwash, brine draw, etc.).
- Inspect drive motor and cam: Remove the top cover and check the drive motor and cam gear. Look for broken teeth, loose mounting, or signs of overheating.
- Check rotor and seals: Remove the rotor and seal kit and inspect for binding, swelling, or debris that could prevent rotation. Replace if worn.
- Test motor operation: With the rotor removed, briefly power the unit and attempt a manual regen to see if the motor turns the cam freely. Replace the motor if it does not rotate.
- Control board diagnosis: If the motor and mechanics are good but the unit does not advance, the electronic control board may not be sending advance signals. Replace the board if necessary.
- Return to service: After repairs, reassemble, take the unit out of bypass, and verify it returns to service mode after a full regeneration.
