Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately place the softener in bypass and unplug it to stop further filling. Mop up any spilled water to prevent slip hazards.
- Check safety float: Open the brine well and lift the float assembly. Ensure it moves freely and that the float shutoff valve closes when lifted. If it is jammed with salt or debris, clean it thoroughly and verify operation.
- Inspect brine valve: On the control head, locate the brine valve/solenoid. With power disconnected, remove the valve and check for debris or scale preventing it from closing. Clean and reassemble.
- Verify refill timing: After restoring power, initiate a manual regeneration and observe the refill stage. Time how long water flows into the brine tank. Compare with the programmed refill time in the installer menu. Adjust if necessary.
- Monitor for leaks: If water continues to enter the brine tank even when the unit is idle, the brine valve is likely leaking through and should be replaced.
Persistent E12 or uncontrolled filling after these steps indicates a faulty brine valve or control board output that should be replaced by a technician.
