Nobel Loss of Softening Capacity

Water remains hard at taps even though the Nobel softener appears to run normally (no error code)

Possible Causes

Exhausted or fouled resin bed, Incorrect hardness setting, Bypassed plumbing around softener, Salt tank empty or salt bridge present

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: No internal electrical work is required. Wear gloves when handling salt and resin.

  • Check bypass valves: Ensure the Nobel softener is not in bypass. The inlet and outlet valves should be open and the bypass valve closed. Incorrect valve positions can send hard water around the unit.
  • Inspect salt level: Remove the brine tank lid. Confirm there is adequate salt (at least above the water line). If the tank is nearly empty, refill with the recommended salt pellets.
  • Break salt bridge: Probe the salt with a broom handle. If you feel a hard crust with empty space underneath, break the bridge and remove loose chunks so salt can contact the water.
  • Verify settings: Check the programmed hardness and capacity on the control panel. If hardness is set too low, the unit will regenerate too late and allow hard water through. Adjust to the actual tested hardness.
  • Manual regeneration: Initiate a manual regeneration and allow it to complete. Test water hardness at a tap after the cycle. If hardness remains high, the resin may be exhausted or iron‑fouled and require professional cleaning or replacement.
