Possible Causes
Defective turbine/flow sensor, Turbine wheel jammed with debris, Broken turbine cable or connector, Control board flow-sensor input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the North Star softener from power before opening the cabinet. Turn off the inlet water and use the bypass valve to isolate the softener.
Steps to check and correct:
- 1. Inspect the turbine/flow sensor: Remove the top cover. Locate the turbine/flow sensor assembly in the valve body (usually on the outlet side). Check for sand, iron sludge, or plastic shavings jamming the turbine wheel. Clean gently with a soft brush and water.
- 2. Check wiring: Follow the small low‑voltage cable from the turbine sensor to the control board. Ensure the plug is fully seated and there are no broken or corroded pins. Reseat the connector.
- 3. Spin test: With water supply briefly turned on (still in bypass), observe if the turbine spins freely. If it binds or does not move, the turbine/flow sensor assembly should be replaced.
- 4. Reset the control: Restore power, take the unit out of bypass, and initiate a manual regeneration. If Err01 returns immediately, the sensor or control board is likely defective.
- 5. Replace parts as needed: If cleaning and wiring checks do not clear the error, replace the turbine/flow sensor assembly. If a new sensor does not resolve the issue, the electronic control board may need replacement.
