Possible Causes

Valve rotor binding, Excessive iron or debris in valve body, Weak or failing drive motor, Incorrect cycle programming

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the softener and place it in bypass before disassembling the valve.

  • 1. Attempt manual advance: Restore power and try to manually advance the regeneration cycle using the control buttons. If the valve does not move or stops abruptly, mechanical binding is likely.
  • 2. Inspect rotor & disc: Remove the valve cover per the service instructions. Examine the rotor & disc for scoring, warping, or heavy iron fouling. Clean with a non-abrasive pad and water, or replace if damaged.
  • 3. Check seals and spacers: Worn or swollen seals/spacers can cause drag on the rotor. Inspect the seal & spacer kit and replace if they appear deformed or excessively worn.
  • 4. Verify programming: Confirm that the regeneration cycle times and steps are set to factory defaults for your North Star model. Incorrect custom programming can cause timeouts.
  • 5. Replace motor if needed: If the rotor turns freely by hand but stalls under power, replace the valve drive motor.
