North Star
False Low Salt Alarm
Err12 displayed, unit reports low salt even when tank is full

Possible Causes
Salt bridge preventing sensor contact, Sensor mounted too high, Fouled salt level sensor, Control calibration error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the softener. Use caution when breaking salt bridges to avoid damaging the tank.
- 1. Check for salt bridge: Push a broom handle or similar tool straight down into the salt. If you feel a hollow space before reaching the bottom, a salt bridge is present. Carefully break it up so salt falls to the bottom.
- 2. Verify sensor position: Ensure the salt level sensor is installed at the correct height per the North Star manual. Adjust if it is mounted too high above the normal salt level.
- 3. Clean sensor: Remove and clean the sensor of any heavy buildup. Rinse with warm water and reinstall.
- 4. Reset alarm: Restore power and clear the low salt alarm through the control menu. Monitor for recurrence.
- 5. Replace sensor: If the alarm returns despite proper salt level and a clean, correctly positioned sensor, replace the salt level sensor.
