Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener before removing the control valve cover. Moving parts can start unexpectedly if power is applied.
- 1. Listen for motor operation: With the cover on and power applied, initiate a manual regeneration. If you hear humming but no movement, the motor or gears may be jammed.
- 2. Remove control cover: Disconnect power, then remove the screws securing the Rayne control head cover. Note the position of any wiring harnesses.
- 3. Inspect gears and cam: Check the main drive gear, cam, and rotor for broken teeth, foreign objects, or binding. Remove any debris and ensure gears rotate smoothly by hand.
- 4. Check motor connections: Verify the motor wiring harness is fully seated on the control board and motor terminals. Look for burnt connectors.
- 5. Test motor (advanced): If you are comfortable and have a multimeter, test for proper voltage at the motor during a regeneration command. If voltage is present but the motor does not turn, replace the motor.
When to call a technician: If the cam position switch or encoder is faulty, or if the control board is not sending power to the motor, a Rayne service technician should perform further diagnostics.
