Possible Causes

Exhausted or damaged cation resin, Softener left in bypass mode, Incorrect hardness or capacity programming, Internal valve bypass due to worn seals

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: No special hazards beyond normal plumbing. If you open plumbing, shut off water and relieve pressure first.

  • 1. Check bypass valve: Confirm the SoftPro bypass is in the Service position. If in Bypass, move it to Service and retest water hardness after a few minutes.
  • 2. Test water hardness: Use a hardness test kit on water before and after the softener. If both are the same, the softener is not exchanging hardness.
  • 3. Verify programming: Confirm hardness, capacity, and regeneration frequency are correctly set for your water conditions and household size.
  • 4. Inspect resin condition: If the unit is older or has been exposed to iron, chlorine, or hot water, the resin may be fouled or damaged. You may notice resin beads in fixtures or a sulfur smell. Consider performing a resin cleaner treatment or replacing the SoftPro cation resin bed.
  • 5. Check for internal bypass: Worn seals or a cracked distributor tube can allow hard water to bypass the resin. This typically requires removing the valve head and inspecting/replacing the piston and seal kit and checking the riser tube.
